Have you ever wanted to own an electric car? or have you ever wanted to drive a Porsche 911? I wanted both, so I decided to build one. This blog is here to document my journey as I convert a 2002 Porsche 911/996 Carrera 2 from a gas guzzler to a completely electric vehicle - not a hybrid!

First real driving experience

Yesterday I spent the whole day working on the car. I installed the transmission, finished up the BMS, and put a few things back together.  Today I filled the differential fluid, ATF fluid, charged up the batteries, put the tires back on, and lots of other smaller items to get things back together and off the car jacks.  From there, I was able to start the car and race around the neighborhood at 30mph!  With this test lap complete, I drove to the monthly Electric Vehicle Association meeting.  During the drive I got it up to a top speed of 52mph at about 4500RPM, all while only using 2nd gear. :)  The TCU is still confused because the gas engine is missing and it will only use the transmission in emergency mode (which only uses 2nd gear) until I work through the electrical magic.  I was able to make the 9 mile round trip drive with no problems.  I don't have any battery state of charge feedback yet in the cockpit, so I was hoping that I had enough juice for the ride.

Here is a picture I took of the dashboard while driving. Its fuzzy because camera phone was not focusing in the dark.  You should be able to make out the "41mph" and the roughly 3700RPM.

  2. Excellent work,

Where are you at with the canbus emulation of the original ecu to the cluster? Let me know if you require ID's and data points for the 996.

  3. Building your own car? It sounds difficult but undeniably cool! Anyway, completing test lap like this is a great progress. I just read your most recent post, and I think it is coming well together. Good luck on your project and hope you'll succeed on this.
